1. General information

The objective of this subject is to provide students with knowledge of English drama, as well as skills for its comprehension and analysis. Through the study of representative texts from different periods, students will acquire an advanced level of analytical and interpretative skills that will enable them to understand the defining features (motifs, themes, conventions, structures, etc.) of dramatic literature within the corresponding socio-historical and cultural contexts. By studying these texts, the subject also aims to improve students' English language skills in an academic context.

2. Learning results

In order to pass this subject, the student must achieve the following goals:

Define and date the different periods into which the evolution of dramatic literature in English is divided.

Justify this periodization taking into account the historical context and the changes and evolution undergone by literature in each of these periods.

Explain, within each period, which are the most representative dramatic subgenres, as well as the most outstanding authors and plays.

Describe the most relevant formal characteristics and the basic contents of the plays included in the syllabus and identify in them the defining features of a dramatic subgenre and/or of a specific author.

Explain the relationship of these plays to both the cultural-historical and the literary context in which they were composed and compare aspects of plays from different periods.

Analyse plays or fragments of plays included in the syllabus, appropriately employing basic tools for literary text commentary and applying them to the study of the form and content of the texts.

Express and justify personal ideas and reflections on specific topics from among those covered in relation to the literature of the period covered by the subject or a specific play/author from among those studied in class.

Use bibliographic and Internet resources to obtain information on a specific subject and present it in a clear and structured way, acknowledging and correctly citing sources.

Establish connections with current reality, assessing the contribution of the movements, authors and plays studied.

Express themselves correctly in English, both orally and in writing, at a level of at least C1.1.

4. Academic activities

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
a. Theory sessions, dedicated to the presentation of the concepts, the historical-cultural contexts, the authors and the plays.

b. Practice sessions, dedicated to the analysis of and commentary on the texts in the syllabus. There will be discussion activities on questions previously raised by the instructor as well as interpretations of specific fragments.

 

SUPERVISED ACTIVITIES
Tutorials dedicated to resolving doubts and supervising the planning and the development of the oral presentations and the essays.

 

AUTONOMOUS ACTIVITIES

a. Study, obligatory readings, preparation of the discussion questions, consulting of complementary bibliography
b. Elaboration of presentations and papers

5. Assessment system

OPTION A:

1) Oral presentation on an aspect of an English play (20%)

2) Academic paper on a topic related to an English play (30%)

3) A written exam consisting of questions about concepts, periods, texts and authors dealt with in the syllabus, to be taken on the date set in the academic calendar (50%)

OPTION B:

An exam consisting of two parts, to be taken on the date set in the academic calendar:

1) Questions about concepts, periods, texts and authors dealt with in the syllabus (50%)

2) An essay question about one of the plays in the syllabus (50 %)

SECOND SITTING

OPTION A

Keep the marks for the presentation (20%) and the paper (30%) of the first sitting (provided they have been passed) and take an exam (50 %) consisting of questions about concepts, periods, texts and authors dealt with in the syllabus.

OPTION B:

Take an exam with the same characteristics as Option B of the first sitting.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Ability to define concepts, explain periods, genres, authors and plays and provide personal interpretations. A minimum mark of 4,5 points must be obtained in each part in order to be counted towards the mark(s) for the other part(s).

1. Información básica de la asignatura

El objetivo de esta asignatura es proporcionar al estudiantado conocimientos sobre la literatura dramática inglesa, así como destrezas para su comprensión y análisis. Por medio del estudio de textos representativos de diferentes épocas se proporcionará al alumnado un nivel avanzado de competencias analíticas e interpretativas que le permitan comprender los rasgos definitorios (motivos, temas, convenciones, estructuras etc.) de la literatura dramática dentro de cada contexto sociohistórico y cultural. A través de dicho estudio también se pretende mejorar las habilidades del alumnado para manejar la lengua inglesa en un contexto académico.

2. Resultados de aprendizaje

El estudiante, para superar esta asignatura, deberá demostrar los siguientes resultados...

Definir y acotar cronológicamente los distintos periodos en los que se estructura la evolución de la literatura dramática en lengua inglesa.

Argumentar dicha periodización atendiendo al contexto histórico y a los cambios y evolución que experimenta la literatura en cada uno de estos periodos.

Explicar, dentro de cada periodo, cuáles son los subgéneros dramáticos más representativos, así como los autores y obras más destacados.

Describir las características formales más relevantes y los contenidos básicos de las obras incluidas en el programa e identificar en ellas los rasgos definitorios de una modalidad dramática y/o de un/a autor/a específica/o.

Explicar la relación de estas obras tanto con el contexto histórico-cultural como con el contexto literario en el que se produjeron además de comparar aspectos de obras de distintos periodos.

Analizar obras o fragmentos de obras incluidas en el programa, manejando correctamente herramientas básicas para el comentario de textos literarios y aplicándolas al estudio de la forma y el contenido de los textos.

Expresar/argumentar ideas y reflexiones personales sobre temas concretos de entre los tratados en relación con la literatura del periodo que cubre la asignatura o con una obra/autor específico de entre los estudiados en clase.

Emplear las fuentes bibliográficas y recursos informáticos para obtener información sobre un tema concreto, y exponerla de forma clara y estructurada, reconociendo y citando correctamente las fuentes.

Establecer conexiones con la realidad actual, valorando la aportación de los movimientos, autores y obras estudiadas.

Expresarse correctamente en lengua inglesa, tanto de forma oral como escrita, a un nivel de por lo menos C1.1.

a. Actividades teóricas orientadas a introducir los conceptos, los contextos históricos y culturales, los autores y las obras

b. Clases prácticas, orientadas al análisis y comentario de los textos seleccionados. Se realizarán actividades de debate sobre cuestiones previamente planteadas e interpretaciones de fragmentos concretos.

5. Sistema de evaluación

PRIMERA CONVOCATORIA

OPCIÓN A:

1) Presentación oral sobre un aspecto de una obra del teatro inglés (20%)

2) Trabajo académico sobre un tema de una obra del teatro inglés (30%)

3) Realización, en la fecha fijada en el calendario académico, de una prueba escrita consistente en preguntas sobre conceptos, periodos, textos y autores/as tratados en el programa (50%)

OPCIÓN B:

Un examen de dos partes, que se realizará en la fecha fijada en el calendario académico:

1) Preguntas sobre conceptos, periodos, textos y autores/as tratados en el programa (50%)

2) Una pregunta-ensayo sobre una de las obras del programa (50 %)

SEGUNDA CONVOCATORIA

OPCIÓN A

Mantener la nota de la presentación (20%) y el trabajo (30%) de la primera convocatoria (siempre que se hayan aprobado) y realizar un examen (50 %) consistente en preguntas sobre conceptos, periodos, textos y autores/as tratados en el programa.

OPCIÓN B:

Realizar un examen de las mismas características que la Opción B de la primera convocatoria

CRITERIOS DE EVALUACIÓN

Habilidad para definir conceptos, explicar periodos, géneros, autores y obras y desarrollar interpretaciones personales. Habrá que alcanzar una nota mínima de 4,5 puntos en cada parte para que medie con la calificación de la/s otra/s parte/s.
